Exercising is a great way to improve health and wellness. For some people, exercising is a regular part of their routine. These people schedule time for the gym and understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. For other people, going to the gym might be a dreadful. Following are a few tips to help you start exercising.
Proper exercise can extend your lifespan. According to the famous Framingham study, expending 2,000 calories per week exercising can extend your lifespan by two years. In other words, if you walk around an hour every day, you can give yourself two more years of life. Exercise has also been proven to decrease your risk of developing certain types of cancers. Bone and joint problems can also be prevented with proper exercise, thus improving your quality of life. Not all exercise has to be at a gym/wellness center. There are a few simple behaviors you can add to your everyday life.
- Take the stairs. This is a great way to add some extra walking and exercise.
- Park the car further away. Don’t spend extra time looking for the perfect spot; instead, park further away and enjoy the walk. These small distances can add up over the long time.
- Do a few sit ups in the morning. While exercising might be the last thing on your mind when you wake up, it doesn’t take long to add a few crunches before you start the day. Do it for a couple of weeks and make it a habit.
- Find an accountability partner. Find someone who takes their health and wellness as serious as you do and keep each other accountable.
If you decide to exercise at a gym, see if they will offer a trial pass to test the facility before you buy. Some gyms will offer a couple of weeks or even a month to try the facility. Most gyms will offer a discount to get started. When choosing a gym make sure you find one that is located close by. You will find it difficult to make the trip if you know that you will have to drive a long distance. Also see what extras the wellness center offers. Do they offer classes? If so, classes can be a great way to connect with others and offer a structured program. Do they offer amenities like a pool or sauna? Amenities can be a great way to relax and reward yourself.
